Dual Credit Courses

Dual Credit is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. Students demonstrating college readiness through a college placement exam can earn college and high school credits in the same course by attending classes at their high school, on the Lamar State College Port Arthur campus, and/or online.

LSCPA partners with school districts, charter schools, private schools, and home school parents to offer academic and technical courses.

Texas Education Code, §§29.182, 29.184, 61.027, 61.076(J), 130.001(b)(3) - (4), 130.008, 130.090, and 135.06(d) provide the Board with the authority to regulate dual credit partnerships between public two-year associate degree-granting institution and public universities with secondary schools.

Benefits

  1. Earn high school and college credit simultaneously.
  2. Transfer many dual credit courses to Texas public colleges and universities, private institutions, and some out-of-state colleges and universities.
  3. Accelerate time to degree completion by getting a head start in college. Dual credit students can earn up to a year or more of college credit.
  4. Build confidence by easing the transition to college.
  5. Students obtain marketable skills for employment beyond high school.
  6. Access the Lamar State College Port Arthur student support services including library, career services, computer labs, and tutoring.

Dual Credit Curriculum

Dual credit courses include courses in the core curriculum, foreign languages, and workforce education. These courses are divided into two groups: academic courses and workforce courses.

Academic courses are designed to satisfy course requirements for Certificate, Associate of Arts (AA), or Associate of Science (AS) degrees. Core curriculum and foreign language courses are academic courses. Academic courses are part of the Texas Academic Course Guide Manual (ACGM) and may be transferred to four year colleges or universities.

Technical courses are designed to satisfy course requirements for Certificate and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees. Technical courses are part of the Texas Workforce Education Course Manual (WECM).

A list of dual credit courses offered by LSCPA and school districts are listed below. For information about courses available for private, charter, or home school dual credit, contact us.
