Lamar State College - Port Arthur Special Populations/Disability Services

Special Populations/Disability Services

The purpose of the Office for Special Populations/Disability Services is to support the College's commitment to accommodate students possessing diverse goals and backgrounds.

The Office assists students who are members of special populations, or who have a documented disability, to receive services that supplement basic student services and will help students to achieve successful performance in instructional programs as well as attain their individual goals.

The Office for Special Populations/Disability Services operates in the belief that all individuals should be:

  • Treated with dignity and respect;

  • Afforded equal opportunity to acquire a complete educational experience;

  • Given an opportunity to discover and develop their special aptitudes and insights;

  • Provided an opportunity to equip themselves with the skills necessary to lead a fulfilling life and to act as a responsible citizen in a world characterized by change.

Special Populations/Disability Coordinator

The Special Populations/Disability Coordinator serves individuals with disabilities; individuals from economically disadvantaged families, including foster children; individuals preparing for nontraditional training and employment; single parents, including single pregnant women; displaced homemakers; and individuals with other barriers to educational achievement, including those with limited English proficiency and those who are academically disadvantaged.

The Special Populations/Disability Coordinator ensures that individuals who are members of special populations or who have a documented disability are receiving adequate services that are supplemental to the basic student services offered by the institution. These services include curriculum modification; equipment and/or classroom modification; supportive personnel such as tutors, note takers, and/or interpreters; instructional aids and devices; childcare; remedial instruction; career guidance and counseling; and other services to ensure the student's full participation in educational programs.

To ensure adequate accommodations, students with disabilities should contact the Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the semester during which the student plans to enroll. Other students who need special assistance should contact the office at the earliest possible time.
